About the Band

Fifty million years ago, Hari Viswanathan and Mike Doherty’s ancestors crawled out of the primordial ooze. Hari’s went east, and Mike’s went west. Now, at last, their descendants have joined forces. Careless is the result not only of pop music’s development through the 20th and 21st centuries, but also of countless millennia of evolution. Goodbye webbed fingers, vestigial tailbones, hookless choruses, awkward verses … Hello pop music that scavenges the best of whatever comes to hand -- soul, funk, Latin, jazz, rock -- and grafts it together seamlessly.

Hari’s vocals and guitar and Mike’s keys form the core of the band, and while the duo have been known to perform on their own, they’ve also enlisted a small army of collaborators from Toronto’s music scene, both live and in the studio. Their upcoming album features longtime associates Ryan Spong (bass) and Sundar Viswanathan (sax), as well as trumpeter and engineer Bryden Baird (Blue Rodeo, Esthero), guitarist Justin Abedin (Jacksoul), vocalists Stéphane Moraille (Bran Van 3000), Dione Taylor, and Kiran Ahluwalia, and studio wiz Gavo (Beck, Nelly Furtado, Tori Amos).

Careless have graced stages at various local watering holes, from the Drake to Rancho Relaxo, and their music has been played on CBC radio, while two songs from their debut EP, Exit Calmly, will be featured in upcoming episodes of the TV series Radio Free Roscoe.
